I have a confession to make.
I haven’t been canvasing in the lead up to this year’s council elections. Things have been lining up against me. I’ve two festivals in the space of 9 days which I’m half way though at the minute and my head is so far up my backside I’m not sure I’d be of use to man or beast if I did make it out.
But I told myself… I can do a blog… I always do a blog.
In all fairness if you haven’t read my blog ‘#VoteTillYouBoke’ on the importance of voting all the way down the ballot paper in our Single Transferable Vote system then forget this one. I’m not going to write a better blog than that in the moments that I have to pull this one together and it’s super important that people make their vote work HARD, especially at the minute.
But look I want to talk about capitalism. I want to talk about some thoughts I heard from Todd Magowan at our Faculty lecture the other day and I want to talk about why the Green Party is the party that we need right now.
Right now in my ward, in Titanic Ward, DUP heartland, child poverty is at 45%. 60% of children qualify for free school meals. Deprivation levels have got consistently worse over the last few years as the austerity agenda pushed by a Tory Govt propped up by the DUP has bitten. And this is BEFORE Universal Credit kicks in.
Locally we’re being badgered into silos by a political elite who benefit from division. And while I have a lot of friends who are APNI voters, to me they’re just another tribe who are certainly wedded to capitalism and their affluent voting base.
Globally, capitalist media and agitators are driving borders between us, funnelling our anger towards other oppressed minorities rather than the establishment that keeps the huge majority of the earths resources for a tiny minority of rich shareholders.
The rich don’t care about global warming. It won’t affect them. And I count the DUP MPs in this number. So what’s the difference between the Alliance and the Greens. Actual ideology - a belief that capitalism has destroyed our communities and our planet not just that fighting is bad.
Todd Magowan talked at length on Sunday about Universalism vs ID politics and how we need to recognise that drawing lines between humans is how capitalism gets us to accept a system that is loaded against 95% of the population.
Which party has the stones to speak for radical change both locally and globally. Which party is genuinely for everyone. One party. The Green Party. That’s why I’m a member, that’s why they’ll be getting my first preference vote and that’s why they’re the fastest growing party in NI.
There’s no such thing as a wasted vote in our system if you do it right, so transfer all you like but it’s time to give the Greens a rattle at Number 1.
